How does the process of myofunctional therapy work?

Myofunctional therapy is a personalized process designed to improve how the muscles of your       mouth, tongue, face, and airway work together. Your care will be based on your unique needs,
                                                                      symptoms, and goals.

Start With a Complimentary Assessment Call

We’ll begin with a free 15-minute phone call to discuss your concerns and determine whether myofunctional therapy may be a good fit for you or your child. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the process.

 Comprehensive Exam and Functional Assessment

The next step is a comprehensive evaluation. During this appointment, I will take time to listen to your concerns, review your health history, and evaluate areas such as:

  • Breathing patterns
  • Tongue movement and resting position
  • Lip closure
  • Chewing and swallowing
  • Jaw and facial muscle function
  • Oral habits
  • Posture and muscle compensation
  • Speech concerns that may affect oral function

Photos, measurements, and simple movement activities may also be included. Nothing should be painful, and I will guide you through each step.

Your Individualized Treatment Plan

After your evaluation, I will create a treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals. No two patients are exactly alike, so your therapy program will be designed just for you.

We will discuss what I found during the evaluation, the areas we will work on, the recommended length of therapy, and what you can expect throughout treatment.

Collaboration With Other Providers

Myofunctional therapy is often one part of a larger care team. Depending on your needs, I may recommend an evaluation with another provider, such as a dentist, orthodontist, ENT, sleep physician, speech-language pathologist, physical therapist, bodyworker, or tongue-tie release provider.

When appropriate and with your permission, I will communicate with your other providers so we can work together to support your care.

Your Therapy Appointments

Therapy is typically scheduled every two weeks through convenient telehealth appointments. Most sessions are approximately 30–45 minutes long.

During each appointment, we will:

  • Review your progress and any challenges
  • Practice your current exercises together
  • Introduce new exercises as you are ready
  • Work toward making healthier patterns feel natural and automatic
  • Answer questions and adjust your program when needed

You will receive simple exercises to practice at home between appointments. Consistent practice is an important part of creating lasting changes. I am also available by email or text if questions come up between sessions.

 Progress Checks and Reevaluation

Your progress will be monitored throughout therapy. At certain points, we will repeat portions of your original evaluation, compare measurements or photos, and discuss the changes you have noticed.

Your treatment plan may be adjusted as your needs change. Once your therapy goals have been reached, we will complete a final reevaluation and create a plan to help you maintain your progress.
